Mindful 90 is a 90-day mindfulness program that pairs a physical plant-growing kit with a guided app. Each day, you complete simple, mindful tasks—like watering your plant—while building habits that help you feel more grounded, present, and balanced essentially "growing" into the best version of yourself.

PROJECT CONTEXT

As the sole designer for Mindful 90, I created the app screens to deliver an engaging, intuitive experience that motivates users to build daily mindfulness habits. I focused on clear navigation, a calming visual style, and seamless integration with the physical plant-growing kit. I handled all aspects of the design process—from concept to final visuals—ensuring the digital experience complemented the tactile, real-world elements of the product to foster both usability and emotional connection.

THE PROBLEM

⚠️ We live in a world that moves fast. We’re constantly disconnected, distracted, and overwhelmed. We want to be more present, more mindful—but building that habit is easier said than done.

Many people feel overwhelmed by mindfulness routines that require significant effort or learning.

Without tangible or visible progress, people may not feel a sense of accomplishment from their mindfulness efforts.

Integrate mindfulness into users’ daily routines so it becomes a lasting habit rather than a fleeting hobby, while keeping them motivated with engaging visual progress tracking.

⚠️ THE CHALLENGE

IDEATION

We wanted to create an experience that would resonate with Gen Z—our primary audience—by pairing mindfulness with something they already love: plants. The idea was to make mindfulness tangible through visible, daily growth, turning the plant into a natural progress tracker.

To ensure the experience was easy to integrate into busy routines, we designed the app to deliver short, actionable tasks that could be completed in just a few minutes a day. The plant served as both a visual motivator and a metaphor for personal growth—reminding users that small, consistent actions lead to transformation over time.

Feedback from early testers guided us in refining the task flow, simplifying reminders, and enhancing the plant-growth tracking feature. These adjustments ensured the app felt rewarding, intuitive, and seamlessly woven into daily life—helping users grow into their best, most mindful selves.

🌱 Combining the physical and digital

Mindful 90 bridges the gap between the physical and digital by pairing a real plant-growing kit with a guided app. The plant serves as a living progress tracker—its visible growth reminding users of their own development. This tangible connection keeps motivation high and helps users stay consistent, turning mindfulness into a daily habit rather than a passing intention.

🌟 Daily Reminders

Mindful 90’s gentle reminders are rooted in research on habit formation. Studies from the National Library of Medicine show it takes about 2–3 months to build a sustainable habit, with automaticity plateauing around day 66. A consistent daily cue—like our tailored notifications—helps integrate a habit seamlessly into someone’s lifestyle.

🎨 Calming UI

All colors used throughout the kiosk were tested with a colorblindness simulator to ensure clear visibility for all users.

From these tests, we learned the importance of designing for inclusivity and simplicity, and how crucial it is for public installations. We noticed how current public transit information systems do not account for these specific audiences. To make public transit more inclusive in general, we needed to address the limitations faced by these user groups.

REFLECTIONS

Testing the UI with a diverse range of users was essential for uncovering usability and accessibility needs I hadn’t anticipated. Iterating after each round of feedback allowed me to refine navigation, streamline tasks, and ensure the interface worked seamlessly for people of all ages, abilities, and technological backgrounds.

Designing for a large-format kiosk screen—after primarily working on phone and laptop interfaces—pushed me to rethink layout, scale, and interaction patterns. This shift led to a more spacious, accessible design that made full use of the display while remaining intuitive to navigate.

Collaborating with the team to prototype a physical product was a new and valuable challenge, as my past work had been entirely digital. Translating the interface into a tangible, real-world kiosk brought new considerations like ergonomics, reachability, and hardware constraints, which ultimately enriched my design process.
